Planted in the 17th Century by the Abbot of Breton on the instructions of Cardinal Richelieu, the wine from the tiny appellation of Saumur-Champigny has developed a cult following. Produced from the Cabernet Franc grape, Saumur-Champigny is immediately appealing with its vivid fruit aromas – blackcurrant, raspberry and redcurrant. It is a ‘big’ wine, filling the mouth with sumptuous fruit flavours balanced by gentle acidity and smooth tannin. Charming brothers Jean-Luc and Jean-Albert Mary, both qualified oenologists, are careful to ensure that traditional wine-making methods of the appellation are enhanced by technology rather than replaced by it. Their careful husbandry results in regular medals at the International Wine Challenge, culminating in 2006 with a rare Gold Medal and first ever Trophy for Loire reds.
